remembering what is good

Filed under: — Not of this World @

the problem with life is that it’s daily
-pope john XXIII

father featured this quote in his sermon the other day, highlighting that it’s not just nice but rather there is a duty to celebrate anniversaries, precisely because life can just get so daily sometimes. we need to return in gratitude to the goodness of those extraordinary moments and milestones in our lives that make them ours, and crown them in blessedness. with the ticking of the clock and the passing of the years we can wane in our appreciation of just how blessed we are, of just how phenomenal an achievement was, of just how much we truly love those given to us.

i am reminded of rdf’s comparison of the declaration of independence to wedding vows to one’s beloved. as the years go by and idealism of the original attempt wanes, as slavery persists or partisanship detracts, we need to pull out those words that capture all of the original intent, the original overflowing commitment, and read them again as if for the first time, to remember the truth they signify and recommit to the worthiness of what was originally pursued and held to.

to aide in holding to those timeless moments of grace, though we are all eaten by time…
