couldn’t resist sending in the following letter to the editor in response to one of the most absurd i’ve ever read. just to give you an idea: “More babies = more consumers = more cheap workers = high rent = more money for business, etc.” it actually gets worse.

part of me thought, this is too stupid to bother to respond to. but then i thought, no, this is SO stupid it needs to be smacked down. some of the more fun and snarky parts had to be eliminated for word limit conservation purposes. but it’s snarky enough me thinks:

Elaine Charkowski (It’s time for women to fight back, August 2) should consider that perhaps freeway widening and high rents are a function of the desirability of Santa Cruz. I know, it sounds crazy, but bear with me. Regarding your main concern of “overpopulation,” US birthrates are currently at 2.1 children per woman, just barely the replacement rate. As long as you’re encouraging American women to combat “overpopulation” while empowering themselves with such means as “Menstrual Extraction,” perhaps the the idea should be followed to its logical conclusion within the context of statistical realities.

Opine what you will about big business and the evil white man farming the uteruses of unsuspecting women for profit. The fact is that without a steady, above replacement birthrate, growing elderly populations must be supported by ever shrinking younger generations, who though taxed ever more, will be unable to sustain the accustomed big government program revenues. Perhaps you might argue that immigration is the answer. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that women “taking back their bodies” is a value enshrined within those multicultural meccas from which come our growing populations of immigrants – many who, by the way, know something about real overcrowding.
